Trumpeter Pedro Knight last farewell - 2007-02-19
Last Tuesday at the Frank E. Campbell funeral home in Manhattan, friends and family offered their last and respectul regards to music and trumpeter Pedro Knight, widower of the legendary salsa singer Celia Cruz, who died a few days ago. The good-bye was just before his remains were driven to the Woodlawn cemetery in the Bronx, where they will stayed along with those of his late wife, Celia Cruz. “It’s a day of sadness and happiness. Soon they’ll both be together,” said musical producer Emilio Estefan, who was present at the ceremony.

The Cuban - American salsero Pedro Knight, widower of legendary salsa singer Celia Cruz, has died at 85 years old. He was a talented trumpeter, he died last Saturday morning at a hospital in Arcadia, California, said hospital spokesman Tony Yang. Knight suffered for years from diabetes and other diseases but his family requested that details of his death be kept private.

Cruz was born in the Santo Suarez
neighborhood of Havana. Her parents were Catalina Alfonso
(Ollita) and Simón Cruz. When she was a child, she earned her
first pair of shoes by singing to a couple of tourists. As a
teenager, her aunt took her and her cousin to cabarets to sing,
however her father encouraged her to keep attending school, in
hopes that she would become a teacher. But a teacher told her
that as an entertainer Cruz could make in one day what most
teachers make in one year.
